Welcome
Welcome on the Homepage of the "Network History of the Earth". Explore with us the interesting and unique earth history of southwest Germany.
What is this network about?
The network is a cooperation of different partners in the southwest of Germany. It was initiated by the Chair of Applied Geography at the University of Tübingen in the year 1997. The network partners act in concert for developing the earth history of southwest Germany into a promotable tourism product for the benefit of the tourists and the people of the region. Members of the network are local and regional tourism boards, museums, scientists etc. Responsible for the coordination is the Chair of Applied Geography at the University of Tübingen. At this Chair takes also the scientific research place, which is about the aspects of networking in the tourism sector.
What are the goals of the network?
Making the public aware of the importance of GEO topics (geology, geomorphology,…) for the economy and modern everyday life
Development of sustainable countryside and landscape related tourism especially geotourism
Sustainable registration, analysis and marketing of countryside and landscape related tourism for tourism, recreational and educational purposes
Initiation of related projects, like "Geopark Swabian Alb", formation of "Albguides" and other countryside guides, GeoRegio Bodensee etc.
Know-How-Transfer in Geotourism and Networking
What is Geotourism? - A definition
»The provision of interpretative facilities and services to promote the value and social benefit of geologic and geomorphologic sites and their materials and to ensure their conservation, for the use of students, tourists and other casual recreationalists.«
Source: Hose, T. (2000): European Geotourism - An overview of the promotion of geoconservation through interpretative provision. Skript eines Vortrages auf dem Symposium "Zukunftsfähiger Geotourismus - Ein Baustein zur lokalen Agenda 21" im Juli 2000 in Bad Urach. p. 2
What is so special about the geology in this region?
Tectonical and erosive forces transformed Southwest Germany into a fascinating countryside and into an open book, ready to be read by you. Tropical Oceans, deserts, vulcanos or the ice age - each period wrote a chapter in the book of this region. And all are laying close to each other like nearly nowhere else. Visit our region and let us help you reading it. Jurassic caves, tropical rocks and cliffs, impressive waterfalls, vulcanic craters and fascinating springs - we offer it all!
